Alphabet Plans Investment of $15bn to Build Artificial Intelligence Data Center in the Indian Subcontinent
The parent firm of Google Alphabet Inc. is set to invest $15bn for constructing an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
This center, that is planned in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam city, is set to become a part of Google's international system of AI centres located in 12 countries.
"It's the largest artificial intelligence center that we are going to be investing in worldwide, excluding the US," Google Cloud's chief executive announced at an conference in the capital city of Delhi this Tuesday, adding that the funding is to be distributed across the coming five years.
This declaration comes at a time President Trump of the United States has been encouraging American companies to give priority to domestic investment.
India's Increasing Significance in AI Infrastructure
The country has emerged as a major hub for AI data centres. The country's low data costs and quickly expanding internet user base have turned it into a focal point for cloud and AI expansion for major tech firms.
"The infrastructure will deliver our pioneering tech solutions to companies and individuals in the country, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and driving growth throughout the nation," stated Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
A definitive arrangement to conclude the venture is scheduled for signing on Tuesday, local government officials announced.
"This represents a major step forward for our state's technological advancement, technological innovation, and international reputation," stated the state's technology minister Minister Nara Lokesh.
The venture will combine computing and artificial intelligence facilities with renewable energy systems and an enhanced optical fiber network.
The State's Data Hub Strategy
This initiative is part of the state government's plan to create six gigawatts of computing facility capacity by the year 2029.
Data centres are actual buildings that house the computing and networking equipment that entities use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.
These include computer servers, memory systems and network equipment like firewalls and routers, in addition to the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.
Funding Benefits
In Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been offering reduced-cost property and electricity to entice international investors.
Industry Growth
The country's computing facility market has grown rapidly during the last five years, surpassing the 1GW capability milestone in 2024 and nearly tripling its 2019 level.
