At least 64 Killed in Rio's Biggest Police Raid on Organized Crime
No less than 64 individuals were killed in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. Over 80 people were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities said.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the security action, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.
Organized Crime Spread
The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, together with numerous weapons.
Mission Context
The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Dozens of the suspects are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
Wider Perspective
Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in the South American nation ahead of major international events in the country.
The UN climate summit COP30 is scheduled in the city of Belem in the north in late autumn.
