Bluefin Fish Fetches Record Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo New Year Sale
A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates outlets throughout Japan and overseas.
"The first tuna heralds fortune," stated the business owner, a familiar figure at the annual new year's auction.
Known as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is noted for placing high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "astonished at the winning bid," noting, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his own historic purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record yet again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be served at its eateries nationwide.
The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for diners at the winner's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," said one satisfied patron.
