Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Selection But McCarthy Left Out
Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in the summer.
Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the summer tour.
Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
After facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.
In a largely experienced selection, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at full-back.
Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's URC league matches so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in the English city earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Northern province lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
