Computer-created graphics purporting to depict Venezuela's president detained after his capture by the American authorities have amassed tens of millions of impressions online.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Appeared Rapidly
The first fake AI image seemingly showing him being escorted off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. This image was unpublished by any authoritative US channels; rather, it was published on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Verification involved Google’s SynthID, confirming the image was created or altered with generative AI.
Additional synthetic pictures were disseminated in the subsequent period, appearing to show additional perspectives of Maduro detained. Visible watermarks on these pictures show they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
The detection tool says the further pictures were also produced using Google AI.
Real Photo Released but Fabrications Continued
Donald Trump posted the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. However, despite this confirmation was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were altered to show the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.
Online investigation reveal the new fake images were initially shared on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Similarly, SynthID found the new graphics were created or altered AI tools.
