‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?

Light-based treatment is certainly having a moment. Consumers can purchase illuminated devices for everything from skin conditions and wrinkles along with muscle pain and gum disease, recently introduced is an oral care tool equipped with miniature red light sources, promoted by the creators as “a major advance in personal mouth health.” Globally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. As claimed by enthusiasts, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, enhancing collagen production, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.

Understanding the Evidence

“It feels almost magical,” observes a neuroscience expert, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, too, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Daylight-simulating devices frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to elevate spirits during colder months. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Types of Light Therapy

While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. During advanced medical investigations, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, extending from long-wavelength radiation to short-wavelength gamma rays. Therapeutic light application employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).

UVB radiation effects, like erythema or pigmentation, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – meaning smaller wavelengths – which minimises the risks. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, so the dosage is monitored,” explains the dermatologist. Essentially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where oversight might be limited, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”

Commercial Products and Research Limitations

Colored light diodes, he notes, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen uptake and cell renewal in the skin, and promote collagen synthesis – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “Although it’s not strong.” Nevertheless, given the plethora of available tools, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells.
