Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World
The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it includes the first new weapon added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is now available and it could very well revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the ideal addition for this update, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," explained a lead developer. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the intended purpose."
If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your friends on steeds, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an attack excellently designed for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a major use cases for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead says. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and deal more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] perfect for mounted duels."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it needs to become an Olympic sport immediately.
Another major addition in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the nautilus shells found in-game for years, can be tamed and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your oxygen levels, so there's no necessity to surface for a breath.
The remaining new features are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a zombie Nautilus popping up in the water, sometimes with a Drowned on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.
"We've been thinking about this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also introduce something for underwater," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you venture in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a similar rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The final pair of items on the drop's list are refinements, including some long-overdue tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford rivers and lakes while mounted on a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it deserves.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
In summary, the year-end release of the year is a pretty good one. The spear alone — and the pandemonium it invites — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
