The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the wave in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
