United Nations Ends Restrictions on President of Syria Before Presidential Visit
Security Council representatives approved to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip next week.
He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending 13 years of internal conflict.
The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to al-Qaeda. The US removed the group from its registry of foreign terror groups this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.
The two leaders convened for the first time during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to Arab nations.
